JOHANNESBURG – The European branch of Zimbabwe’s opposition Zapu party this week castigated the government over its plan to erect a statue of the country’s late Vice President Joshua Nkomo, who was also Zapu’s founding leader. Nkomo’s family, led by the revered late politician’s daughter, Thandiwe, last Tuesday called on Zimbabweans to help fight the government over the erection of Father Zimbabwe’s statue at Karigamombe Centre in Harare, where construction has already begun. Zapu Europe added its voice last Thursday, describing as “mischievous” the government’s decision to put up the Nkomo statue at Karigamombe Centre. “This building, which was renamed (from Piccadilly centre) to humiliate him and ZAPU, is extremely offensive and equal to a public crucifixion of Zimbabwe’s true national hero,” said Zenzo Ncube, party spokesman for Europe. The party said that with its plan, the government exposed that those who persecuted and humiliated Nkomo during his lifetime still had burning desires to continue humiliating him, his family and all those who support him and what he stood for, even after his death. However, both Zapu and Nkomo’s family have expressed no objections from another statue of the late politician, which is planned for the country’s second biggest city of Bulawayo. |
