MUTARE – Relatives and party officials from MDC-T have been prevented from taking food to the arrested MDC-T ward 11 chairman, Albert Kapungu.
Working under instructions from Zanu (PF) members, agents from the Law and Order division at Mutare Central Police Station last Thursday arrested Kapungu after he had a heated exchange with Zanu (PF)’s non-elected councillor for Mutare, Isau Mupfumi, during a marathon Mutare City Council meeting. The MDC-T Manicaland province spokesperson, Pishai Muchauraya, confirmed the arrest and intimidation of Kapungu who is held at Mutare central police station. “There is a continuation of harassment, intimidation and torture of our party officials in the province. It is unfortunate that the police perceived that Kapungu uttered statements that undermined (Isau) Mupfumi.” He added: “Visitors who want to bring him food are being denied access. It is very surprising that the police can arrest an elected official over such a petty issue.” There have been ongoing power struggles among the Zanu (PF) non-elected councillors who were appointed by Ignatius Chombo and the democratically elected MDC – T councillors in running the affairs of the city. |
