CHIMANIMANI - A senior Zanu (PF) official in Manicaland, Janet Knight, is leading a terror campaign in Chimaninmani to force villagers to attend Zanu (PF) political meetings in the area.
Knight, commonly referred to as Mai Knight in Zanu (PF) political circles, has become synonymous with terror in Chimanimani district. Last week she instructed known CIO operatives and Zanu (PF) youth militia to abduct and kidnap the MDC-T chairlady for ward 15. The MDC-T provincial spokesperson for Manicaland, Pishai Muchauraya, said: “Our member (name with held) was kidnapped in broad daylight by known CIO agents and Zanu (PF) militia. She was detained and interrogated at the home of Knight, who heads the Zanu (PF) women’s league in the province. She was detained at Knight’s house for more than eight hours. She was interrogated about her support for the MDC-T and her views on a new constitution.” Muchauraya said Knight had been involved in many incidents of kidnapping and harassment of MDC- T supporters and officials in the Chimanimani area. “Her home was used as a torture base during the mass assaults that followed Mugabe’s defeat in the March 2008 elections,” said Muchauraya. Villagers in Chimanimani have complained that Knight, who is said to have close links with top Zanu (PF) leadership, is re-establishing militia bases in the area, saying they are now living in fear of harassment and beatings by party thugs and secret agents. The villagers said there is a high presence of armed soldiers in Chimanimani who are moving with Zanu (PF) youths terrorizing perceived enemies of the party. The villagers said that there is much concern that a repeat of the violence unleashed on the MDC-T during the March 2008 harmonised elections, appears to have started again. |
