jacob_zuma_2.jpgJOHANNESBURG - Jackob Zuma, President of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC), says that his party will make political and economic unity on the African continent its major foreign policy thrust.

Addressing foreign diplomats in the capital city of Tshwane Wednesday, Zuma, who is also running for South Africa's highest post in next month's elections and is already widely tipped for that post, said that the ANC aims to  strengthen the country's role in peace, reconstruction, development and integration, especially in the Southern African region.
We must emphasise what our icon, former President Nelson Mandela said in 1992, that the primary task of the ANC's international policy was to be a friend to every nation in the world, said Zuma.
We will therefore continue to explore and deepen our multilateral and bilateral relationships globally. The message we want to send out to the world is that our country is in motion towards an even better life. Our democratic institutions remain strong and effective.
The ANC leader added that his party has, with the help of the international community, strive also to alleviate poverty.
We have a clear plan of how to fight poverty, crime and other social ills in the world. We seek the partnership of the international community as we work to achieve our goals.
We will therefore be strengthening our economic relations on both a South-South and North-South level.
The ANC Government seeks to strengthen its role in the multilateral arena to work together with the South for a more equitable distribution of power, added Zuma.
The bald-headed leader said that there his party, also expected to remain in power after the elections, would take advantage of what he termed a positive climate in the world and a surge towards constructive dialogue, to achieve its goals.
Domestically, we expect a very smooth transition from the current administration to the next one.
As the ANC we are working to get a huge majority, and to immediately hit the ground running to institute the changes we mention in the Manifesto, to improve service delivery.
We trust that we will continue working with you, to do more to make the world a much better place for all our children and future generations.
