Transitional authority, the answer to the Zim crisis Print

It is ironic how Zanu (PF) has managed to continuously set the agenda of the day, diverting people's attention from what really matters while they derail the people's progress towards the democratization of their country.
Currently the people of Zimbabwe are at their wit's end trying to find solutions to the peace deal deadlock when in actual fact they should not be considering it because it will never give birth to the democracy we desire.
Mbeki should have dismissed this GNU concept seeing that the democracy South Africa enjoys was born out of a transitional government, not what he allowed Zanu (PF) to present to MDC as a solution. It is a solution to the power struggle but an insult to our suffering as the people of Zimbabwe.
What we should be conversing about right now is the total dismissal of this Government of National Unity and the demand for an all inclusive transitional government for the whole nation's benefit.
The dismissal of this GNU should be based on the fact that a country's problems are not an excess of the politics but a lack of principled politics. This means that even if the political parties unite to govern without changing the bases of governance and engaging the masses on this change, then it is as bad as if nothing had been done.
A GNU forged for sharing power among rival elite factions is utterly useless to the people of Zimbabwe because it is a win win situation for the contending camps while the people lose.
Therefore the people of Zimbabwe need and befittingly deserve a transitional government inclusive of all the political parties and the civic society. This governing instrument, a people driven constitution will then be the basis of an election to be observed by all including the international community.
In their agreement to share power the political parties did not specify as to whether it will be equal sharing or that one would have more power than the other.
Had it been a transitional authority, an arrangement that enjoys the support of the civic society and the greater number of Zimbabweans, they would be addressing our humanitarian tragedy: food crisis, health crisis, water crisis, cash crisis. It would avert starvation and save lives, would return normalcy to national life.

During its life-span Zimbabweans would be given full freedom to write their own constitution in an open process such as that outlined in the Zimbabwe People's Charter. The process would be concluded by a referendum, culminating in the holding of free and fair elections and installing a new government. These elections would be open to all keen to participate in the observation process. But alas, this is not yet so instead SADC is working so hard to make this gimmick of a GNU work.
The cholera out break and starvation facing the people of Zimbabwe should be a clear indication that these attempts to resuscitate the GNU are not in the best interests of the people of Zimbabwe as they are dropping like flies.
Africa Arise, the people of Zimbabwe need. Let the world join hands and alleviate the Zimbabwean crisis and save human kind.
