Restrictive measures must stay Print

morgan_tsvangiraiPrime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai (Pictured) is reported to have urged the international community at the world economic forum in Davos last weekend to lift the targeted restrictive measures against the Zanu (PF) human rights abusers.

We believe this statement was ill-advised. The time has not yet come for these measures to be lifted. Zanu (PF) has done nothing to deserve this. In fact, we agree with those who feel that even stricter measures should be imposed on the Zanu (PF) hierarchy in an effort to persuade them to abandon their wicked ways and return the country to the rule of law.
There is still selective application of the law. People are still being arrested arbitrarily. Farm invasions have been intensified. There is no respect for the rule of law. Some magistrates have joined the police in disregarding High Court orders.
Zanu (PF) has arrogantly announced that it will make no more concessions to the MDC. What concessions? Nobody is asking them to make any concessions. All we want is for them to abide by the terms of the agreement they have signed.
What Tsvangirai should be asking the international community for is smart aid – where those ministries that are working genuinely to uplift the standard of living of ordinary Zimbabweans – as opposed to Zanu (PF) members only – should be rewarded. These ministries include health, education, housing, labour and social welfare should be at the forefront of receiving aid.
But certainly no assistance should be given to those ministries actively involved in perpetuating Zanu (PF) oppression and corruption. These include the police and other security forces, the justice and information ministries, local government and mines.
