On the front page of this issue we carry a story about an official police signal ordering the monitoring of MDC, civil society and NGO meetings. This makes extremely disturbing reading. More than a year after the formation of the unity government, why does the signal still refer to the MDC as “the opposition”? Do they know something we don’t? Is this an attempt by police commissioner Augustine Chihuri to run a parallel police force? Or are the police still working solely for Zanu (PF). Is Chihuri a run-away cop, out of control? Or is he merely obeying his master’s voice? And who is that master – is it co-minister of home affairs Kembo Mohadi or somebody else? We don’t believe Giles Mutsekwa, the MDC co-minister of home affairs would have consented to such an order. The inclusive government must exercise control. They cannot allow somebody paid from the public purse to use the nation’s police force for partisan purposes. We would have thought that the formation of the inclusive government, and the new spirit of reconciliation it was supposed to embody, would have precluded such a blatantly partisan order being given. We had hoped the ZRP would take the necessary steps to function in a non-partisan manner as a professional police force, and not reduce themselves to Zanu (PF) militias. The MDC is a legitimate political party, in parliament and in the government. We don’t see any need for the ZRP to interfere with its legitimate business. |
