BULAWAYO - Four men were arrested at the Plumtree Border Post last week after police foiled their attempts to smuggle cigarettes worth R97 000 into neighbouring Botswana.Matabeleland South Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, said the incident occurred on October 22 at the Border Point's exit gate. "Police officers manning the border received a tip off from reliable sources and intercepted two light vehicles, a Ford Korea and Ford Ranger with South African number plates," he said. Dzirutwe said after a search was conducted on the two vehicles, police discovered 967 bricks of Remington Gold cigarettes in one vehicle and 969 bricks of Dullahs Spirit of Freedom cigarettes on the other. Both types are high quality export cigarettes. "They created compartments by welding metal sheets under the original roof of the cars. Other cigarettes were tied under the vehicle on the chassis using polythene bags,” said the inspector. |
