The country’s second largest referral Hospital received donations of over US$100 000 consisting of drugs, medical and surgical equipment last week from Celebration Ministries International Church to facilitate the resumption of surgical operations. Mpilo Hospital was forced to close its theatre department about five months ago after running out of the necessary equipment and drugs required during surgical operations.
The development saw patients being referred to expensive private Hospitals for any surgical procedures. “Since we have doctors in our church, we do outreach programmes that seek to help health institutions,” said Pastor Norman Mangena from the Celebration Ministries Church on Thursday. The donation was made through Celebration Health, an arm of the church whose vision is to transform lives and help communities through sustainable health care.
Pastor Mangena, who was presenting the donation, added that his church was committed to working with health institutions in saving lives. Mpilo Central Hospital Clinical Director, Dr Wedu Ndebele, said: “The donation will go a long way to alleviate the suffering of the patients in Bulawayo.” Celebration Ministries has on numerous occasions come to the rescue of Mpilo Hospital whose operations are battered by lack of drugs, equipment and foreign currency. A recent report by the Deputy Prime Minister, Thokozani Khuphe, said the health delivery sector remained crippled, despite an injection of funds following the formation of the inclusive government.
