An MDC activist, Edwin Chingami who had gone into exile in the run-up to last year's June 27th run-off elections was murdered upon his return home at the weekend. This has been confirmed by the police and Bikita West MP, Heya Shoko.32 year old Chingami was an MDC supporter who was an election observer for the party in the March 2008 harmonised elections. He was murdered at a funeral in Ward 8, Chirove village under Chief Nhema, at the weekend. Chingami had fled the country for fear of the violence that had hit Zimbabwe. Shoko said he had gone to the funeral wake of his niece when known ZANU PF youths accused him of being a sell out who had fled the country. They started beating him and a witness said he was hit by a stone on the head. Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Phibion Nyambo denied the murder was politically motivated, saying the suspects were drunk. But MDC provincial chairman, Wilstaff Sitemere confirmed that Chingami was murdered for campaigning for the MDC, as well as standing as the party's elections observer. He said that Chingami was told he would die if he returned. |
