mapungubweHARARE - The local tourism sector is set to get a boost from the signing of a treaty between the Zimbabwe, Botswana and South African governments which will consolidate the progress made since the establishment of the Greater Mapungubwe transfrontier conservation area in 2006.

In a telephone interview, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Francis Nhema, said the signing of the treaty would make travelling across the borders of the three countries easier for tourists - especially now that there were no more visa requirements.

He said the arrangement would also facilitate free movement of wildlife within the reserve area. According to Nhema, the park was renamed upon the signing of the treaty as a tribute to the indigenous community and the local culture.
Environment ministers from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana recently met in South Africa and signed a treaty officially integrating the Mapungubwe transfrontier conservation area formerly known as the Shashe Limpopo Transfrontier Park

According to statistics from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) the country has enjoyed an increase in tourist arrivals since the new government came into office.
There are currently seven transfrontier parks in the southern African region formed by 30 national parks in nine countries.
