COUP plot fears mount, as election results delay.
Various types of army vehicles were parked inside the yard and some, that failed to get space inside, were parked outside, partially blocking the road between 3rd and 4th street. Civilian cars were barred from stopping near the Defense House, and pedestrians were made to hurry while crossing the road near the building. An emergency meeting of the Army Chiefs was taking place in Harare, only a day after the voting day. Tension is increasing and fears are already mounting that the people's voice may be sacrificed for the interests of a few ambitious Army generals. ROHR Zimbabwe has just discovered pointers to a possibility of a coup de etat by the army commanders in the wake of a surprise victory by the Oppostion MDC Tsavangirai party over the ruling party Zanu PF and its presidential candidate, Robert Mugabe. Today's signs can be cross referenced to earlier statements made by the commander of Zimbabwe's army, General Constantine Chiwenga that " Elections are coming and the army will not support or salute sell-outs and agents of the West before, during and after the presidential elections,... We will not support anyone other than President Mugabe who has sacrificed a lot for this country." Gen Chiwenga told Zimbabwe Standard, a privately owned newspaper. Retired Major Retired Major-General Paradzayi Zimondi had made earlier threats and a whole lot of other influential army generals including the Commissioner general of the Zimbabwe Republic Police who publicly aligned himself to Zanu PF. ROHR Zimbabwe can only hope that such an initiative is not given fertile ground to germinate in Zimbabwe, at a time when Zimbabwe desperately needs an immediate solution the deeply rooted record of human rights violations, extreme economic decay and a runway inflation of more than 100 000 percent. We urge the ruling party and public figures to respect the outcome of the elections. As yet, Retired Major and Chairman of the widely criticised Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Justice George Chiweshe is yet to announce the results whose counting finished very early in the morning this Sunday. Around 10:00 hrs George Chiweshe fled from Meikles Hotel in Harare through the back door after he failed to respond to the media who were curious to hear the status of the results. He was almost beaten up by activists who accused him of stalling time to give room for manipulation of elections results, thereby disenfranchising the electorate. Unconfirmed reports show that Zanu PF is panicking and has since called for an emergency Politburo meeting in Harare today. We hope such emergency meeting can only brew something positive for the people. We strongly regret any attempts to use violence and unorthodox means to usurp the wish of the majority. The end result can be widespread violations of human rights and people's freedoms, chaos and war. We strongly feel such attempts must be met with the highest degree of condemnation both on a regional and international level. |
